2005 KWGA/Natasha Matson Fife Scholarship Recipient

2005 Scholarship WinnerThe 2005 recipient of the KWGA Natasha Matson-Fife Scholarship is Margaret “Maggie” Welch, daughter of Stan and Margo Welch of Syracuse, Kansas. Maggie carries a 5.5 USGA Handicap Index, and has participated in three KWGA junior tournaments and numerous high school golf tournaments throughout her four-year high school career. Maggie said: “Succeeding as a golfer and being a member of a successful golf team has given me confidence. I have formed many lasting friendships and look forward to playing golf the rest of my life.”

One of her letters of recommendation had this too say: “Maggie balances her academic work with a strong extracurricular record,” and her high school golf coach says “Maggie is a leader, but as a quiet person, she tends to lead more by example. She is a good person with a good set of values.” Her employer for several years at Syracuse Commission Company said that “Maggie not only does her work but generally is always willing to take on more responsibility.”

Maggie’s grade point average is 3.9 while taking a full schedule of courses such as physics, chemistry, trigonometry, economics, Spanish and business law. She is a four-sport letterwoman, member of the National Honor Society and Foreign Language Club, as well as serving as basketball captain and class treasurer. She has volunteered for the community food drive and served as a tutor during summer school.

Maggie is currently attending McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where she plans to play golf while working toward a degree in accounting.
