THannah Martin, 2009 graduate of Salina South High School, joins an impressive list of KWGA Scholarship winners who demonstrate exceptional intellectual and academic ability as well as strong leadership and citizenship skills. Although not a pre-requisite, many of these young women have gone on to play college golf. As the newest recipient of the KWGA/Natasha Matson Fife Scholarship, Hannah distinguished herself in the classroom and was routinely named to the Salina South High School Honor Roll.
A three-sport high school athlete, Hannah
competed in Girls’ Golf, Swimming, and Basketball. As a high school senior Martin won the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division I Championship, the Kansas State High School 5A Regional Championship, and finished second in the Kansas High School 5A State Tournament. Hannah was honored at the Salina South High School Honors Night Banquet (spring, 2009) with the Salina South High School Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award.
The daughter of Bary and Sherry Martin, Hannah is a fourth generation golfer. She recently observed, “It is not unusual for discussions at our family gatherings to center around some obscure golf ruling that one of us experienced.” Hannah participated in KWGA tournaments and championships since 2004 and won her age division of the KWGA Junior Girls Championship in 2006, 2007, and 2008.
The summer of 2008 was an exciting golf season for Hannah. She won the Kansas District Optimist International Junior Golf Championship in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Likewise Hannah qualified for and participated in the Walmart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links where she and Champions Tour partner Bruce Vaught finished in a tie for 7th place. Not surprisingly, Hannah was designated as a First Tee Scholar by the National First Tee Foundation.
Hannah concluded competition as a KWGA junior golfer with the 2009 season. Teamed with her dad, Bary, the Martins finished second in the Championship Flight of the May 3, 2009 Adult-Junior Tournament at Sand Creek Station Golf Course. She won a scorecard playoff to secure 3rd place in the 17-18 Year-Old Division of the Junior Season Opener Tournament at Prairie Trails Golf &
Country Club in El Dorado. Hannah came back two weeks later to win the Emporia Country Club Junior 1-Day Tournament and she finished 2nd at the 2009 KWGA Junior Girl’s Championship hosted by Winfield Country Club. A first place finish at the KWGA Leawood Junior 1-Day Tournament on July 13 was a tune-up for Hannah to win her final KWGA junior tournament, the match play format Junior Tournament of Champions at Sand Creek Station Golf Course.
Hannah signed to compete as a Golf student-athlete for Wichita State University. She led the WSU women in scoring at her first collegiate tournament, the September 14-15 University of Nebraska
Chip-N-Club Tournament, with scores of 78-75-73. The team went on to play four more fall season tournaments and Hannah made the varsity squad for each tournament.
Congratulations to 2009 KWGA/Natasha Matson Fife Scholarship winner, Hannah Martin. |
